Microsoft Outlook crahes on startup due to MobileMe Services

Today I had a customer having problems with his Microsoft Outlook 2007 during startup due to MobileMe Services (mobilemeservices.exe) ; I was told that Apple iTunes installed an update a few days ago and since then Outlook came up with the crashed mobilemeservices.exe.

However I did not do any further research on this issue as the customer doesn’t use any cross functionality between Microsoft Outlook 2007 and Apple iTunes. So if you’re looking for the quick’n dirty solution, too … this is the way to go on Microsoft Windows 7 but it might be very similar down to Vista; on Windows 8 / 8.1 you have to open the location first by right clicking on the app icon and clicking the button at the bottom of the screen.

  1. Go to Start > All Programs > Microsoft Office > RIGHT click on Outlook > settings > compatibility tab > enable Administrator mode by checkbox > [OK]
  2. open Outlook as usual
  3. go to Tools > Trust Center > Manage: COM Add-ins (dropdown box at the bottom of trust center’s window!) > [Go…]
  4. a list with all installed Outlook plugins should come up; active ones do have a checkmark
  5. find and uncheck at least the mobileme services add-in; you might want to uncheck iCloud add-in as well
  6. Close / save all settings
  7. Close Outlook
  8. go back to step 1) but this time deactivate Administrator mode again on Outlook

Now Outlook should open without any further crashes due to mobilemeservices.exe! ;-)

p.s. if you found a solution keeping the iTunes add-ins active please feel free to leave a comment!
